Plus: Anti-Abortion Groups Use Lies, Fear to Muddy Ohio Issue 1 Repro Rights Vote
Here’s another edition of Hard to Believe It’s Only Tuesday, a weekly roundup of the top headlines, tweets, toks, takes, and more in abortion news. You can always email me (andrea.grimes@gmail.com, or grimesandrea@proton.me for more sensitive inquiries) or DM me on instagram with action items, takes, and news clips. This post is probably too long for email, so click the headline above or head to the HTBIOT page to get the full read in your browser, because you don’t want to miss this week’s Goodnight and Good Dunk!
PROGRAMMING NOTE: I’m looking for new photos to illustrate this newsletter, as the font of Creative Commons options on Flickr is not endlessly self-renewing. Have you taken photos at a public pro-abortion protest or other fun feminist event that you’d be willing to let me publish? I’ll credit folks, of course, and am happy to make a small donation to a cause of the photographer’s choosing if I end up using a pic. So! Please send photos my way — andrea dot grimes at gmail com — or tag me wherever your images already exist online, assuming it’s clear you have ownership/permission to share.

The big takeaway: Becca Andrews’ must-read profile of abortion provider Dr. Aaron Campbell is just so thorough and compassionate and refreshing — we get to see Dr. Campbell as a whole person while better understanding the toll that abortion provision can take on folks in 2023.
Plus: I’ve rounded up some of the best coverage of the Ohio Issue 1 vote below.
👩🏽⚕️What’s happening with clinical abortion care, providers, medication abortion, and such:
“As Abortion Access Shrinks, Hospitals Fill in the Gaps” (NYT) — This is an interesting piece about the necessity and role of hospital-based abortion care, but the headline is pretty misleading. Hospitals in general have not been great about “filling in” abortion access gaps. What’s happening in the Chicago area (from whence this story is reported) seems to be a notable exception — and an interesting/instructive model for how abortion funds, hospital providers, and clinicians can work together to improve access in other geographies where abortion care is legal.
Rewire‘s Jessica Mason Piekloexpects SCOTUS to take up the medication abortion case out of Texas: “The next thing to watch for is whether anti-choice advocates pull a Dobbs-style switcharoo (don’t forget that conservatives didn’t even initially ask the Court to overturn Roe v. Wade—they waited until after the justices agreed to hear the case to do so) and request that the justices pull mifepristone approval altogether.“
The Arizona Republic‘s Laurie Robertshas a whiplash-inducing rundown of Kari Lake’s many and various (mostly anti-) abortion stances.
Recent Northern Arizona University grad Emma Burnsis in the Arizona Mirrorsharing her experience with medication abortion: “The option to end my pregnancy in an environment familiar to me, surrounded by love, without extensive financial burden, is one I am forever grateful for. Though the abortion process was complicated for me logistically, financially, and emotionally, I am one of the lucky ones: I had a sound support system, a loving partner and the ability to afford the incredible cost of safe abortion materials.“
The Tweets/Toks/Grams
I appreciated We Testify‘s lens on the news that Britney Spears has shared her abortion story:
In her new memoir, Britney Spears shares her abortion story, “It was a surprise, but for me, it wasn’t a tragedy… But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy." Everyone deserves support during their pregnancy decisions and to make the decision that is right for them. pic.twitter.com/TcGkfsGBnC
The FACE Act was designed to protect abortion clinics but is a real exercise in both-sidesism: It applies the same protections to churches, which already had special protections under federal law. It is also broad enough to apply to any “reproductive health” facility.
